About Fly Fishing Canada’s Leaderboard (Simple Guide for New Anglers)

The Fly Fishing Canada (FFC) Leaderboard is our national ranking system for competitive fly fishing. It’s designed to recognize angler performance, encourage participation, and help identify anglers who may be ready to represent Team Canada at international events.

If you’re new to competition, the Leaderboard is your roadmap for tracking your progress and seeing how you stack up across the country.

What Is the Fly Fishing Canada Leaderboard?

The Leaderboard is a yearly ranking of anglers who compete in FFC-sanctioned fly fishing events.
Every time you fish an event, you earn points. The better you finish—and the bigger or more challenging the event—the more points you get.

At the end of the year, those points form your national ranking.

It’s that simple.

Why Does the Leaderboard Matter?

  • It shows your growth as a competitive angler

  • It motivates anglers to attend events, improve skills, and learn from peers

  • It helps FFC identify anglers who may be strong candidates for future Team Canada selection

  • It builds a fun, competitive community across the country

Whether you’re experienced or brand new to competitions, the Leaderboard keeps you connected and inspired.

How Do You Earn Points?

You earn points by competing in FFC-sanctioned events. Your Leaderboard score comes from:

  1. Your Nationals Results
Nationals are the biggest event of the year and always worth the most points.

  2. Your Best River Event of the Year
    Your single best river-based result.

  3. Your Best Lake Event of the Year
    Your single best lake-based result.

  4. Your Best Mixed Event of the Year
Mixed = river + lake, or a combination of formats.
If there’s no mixed event, your next best river or lake event counts instead.

You don’t need to fish every type of event—but the more you fish, the more chances you have to post strong scores.

How Are Points Assigned?

Event organizers submit results to FFC, and points are calculated automatically based on:

  • How many anglers competed

  • How many sessions the event had

  • Where you finished

Bigger events = more points.
Higher placings = more points.

Every angler who competes earns at least some points—nobody gets zero.

Who Can Appear on the Leaderboard?

Anyone who:

  • Is a current FFC member, and

  • Competes in sanctioned events

New anglers appear on the leaderboard as soon as their first event score is submitted.
